There are a lot of different sports out there, but there is an ongoing debate as to which ones would be classified as extreme or adventure sports. Most adventure sports tend to have members who are youthful. This is not a requirement, but youth tend to be less cautious and more prone to risk taking. Extreme sports tend to be sports where only one person participates rather than traditional sports that work in teams. People who get heavily into extreme sporting often do not get advice from coaches when they start off, but might later on as their experiences increases.
Athletes that are classified as adventure sports participants tend to be in competition with other types of athletes who have accomplished a known activity by pushing the boundaries of known sports activities to an extreme. Adventure sports also combine many environmental variations in terrain and weather. Types of adventure sports that often have to combat weather include: snowboarding, rock or mountain climbing and water adventure activities like surfing, wakeboarding, water skiing, scuba diving.
It is difficult to evaluate the performance of an individual who is involved in adventure sports because there is no real standard to measure the performance of the athlete. Many time competitions are done in secret (because it may involve high risk) and the results are not made well known until after the event occurs.
There is no definite origination date for adventure sports. The popularity of adventure sports has been promoted by X Games, which is a multi-sport event where individuals compete in adrenaline rushing sports. Generally, a sport is classified as an adventure sport if there is some risk to life involved in doing it.
Another characteristic of adventure sports is a rejection of authority or the status quo. This is pretty much the domain of Generation Y who has adopted adrenaline sports as their own contribution to sport trends. Sports that are currently seen as adrenaline activities now include: aggressive skating and dirt biking, where in the past they were limited to bungee jumping, hang gliding, storm chasing and mountaineering.
Really, any sport can add an extreme element to it. If you think of it, someone’s probably doing it somewhere. If you can’t find them, then you can start your own sport. If you are looking for activities that are going to get your heart pumping just take a look around and you will find a wealth of adrenaline sports that will get you going.
Even though adventure sports are generally thought of as a young man’s game, anyone can participate. Although there are probably some occasions where you need to go ahead with the doctor’s permission. Even if your doctor agrees, if you are a married man, you want to pass it by your wife first, unless you think incurring her wrath is an adventure sport itself and become thrilled by that adrenaline rush too.
